IB Primary Years Programme
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum is designed to inspire and challenge students 3 to 12, that focusses on the social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to the academic development, within a caring international environment.
Approach
The PYP is inquiry based, with an emphasis on knowledge, conceptual understanding and thinking skills.
The Programme of Inquiry is made up of six units per grade level, developed around the IB's transdisciplinary themes which allows students to explore key concepts in context.
Learning Areas
The Primary Years Programme includes the core subject areas of English (Language Arts), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, as well as Music, Art, Information Technology, Personal, Social and Emotional Learning. In addition, students learn Italian as a first or second language, depending on their Italian language proficiency.
Transdisciplinary Skills
The Primary Years Programme requires the development of transdisciplinary skills which cross the individual subject areas, including thinking, communication, social, research and self-management skills.
The curriculum also aims to develop appropriate attitudes, such as integrity, respect, and tolerance.
Finally, students are encouraged to apply what they learn through practice, not just inside the School community but also in the wider world. Effective action is voluntary and involves the students in exercising their own initiatives and taking responsibility.
